Embracing the Dark: Wellness Tips for November

November 1, 2026

By November, daylight is a limited resource. If you find yourself feeling sluggish, a little low, or just less motivated than usual, you're in excellent company. The good news is that there are simple, evidence-informed habits that can help you feel more grounded and energised through the darker months.

Prioritise Morning Light

Even on overcast days, outdoor light in the morning is significantly brighter than indoor lighting. A 20-minute walk outside within an hour of waking — even under grey skies — can help regulate your circadian rhythm, improve sleep quality, and lift your mood. Think of it as a free and effective daily reset.

Rethink Your Evening Routine

November's long evenings are genuinely an invitation to slow down. Rather than fighting the urge to stay in, lean into it. Cook something warm and unhurried. Read a physical book. Take a bath. Cultures with long winters have long known the restorative value of hygge — the Danish concept of cosy, intentional comfort — and there's real wisdom in it.

Move Your Body Indoors

If outdoor exercise feels harder to motivate in the dark and rain, build a simple indoor routine. Yoga, stretching, bodyweight exercises, or even a dance session in your kitchen all count. Consistency matters far more than intensity, especially through the winter months.

Watch Your Vitamin D

At this latitude and time of year, we simply don't get enough sun exposure to produce adequate vitamin D naturally. Many Canadians are low in vitamin D by late autumn. It's worth speaking with your doctor or pharmacist about whether a supplement makes sense for you.

Stay Connected

Social withdrawal is tempting when it's dark and rainy, but isolation tends to compound low mood. Schedule regular time with people you enjoy — even a short phone call or a coffee date can make a meaningful difference.

Create Light in Your Home

Warm, layered lighting — table lamps, candles, string lights — makes an interior feel genuinely welcoming rather than dim and dreary. Consider swapping harsh overhead lights for softer alternatives in the rooms where you spend your evenings.

November is not something to endure. With a few intentional adjustments, it can become one of the more grounding and restorative months of the year.
